You can't really blame me for never reading the book, it's quite hefty. But I was hoping that watching the movie would make me a little bit more cultured. It didn't. The plot was not given a fighting chance to develop properly and lacked some serious substance. The only things that were good about this film were the things you typically don't think of when you want to watch a film. Costume design. No one ever goes into a movie thinking about how great the costumes are going to be. We want a good story and some great acting, and unfortunately got neither of those things.

Great show. Really appreciated the cinematography and the period costumes. Quite the story. Well done Keira.

An incredible drama, acted very well and staged beautifully.

Enjoyed the way the movie was done. A little different but not many people would take to it. Not a dull moment whatsoever.

Unique directorial presentation but I not sure " Joe"got it "Wright"! Very little chemistry between the two lovers. I think a miscast here! Jude Law plays the forgiving husband well, but the whole movie misses the mark. Fantastic costumes, but a movie has to be more than clothes!!

Loved the way it was filmed. It was not a disappointment. Worth seeing for sure.

From what I read about Anna Karenina, it seemed like this movie didn't capture how truly tragic the whole story was. It would have been nice if the actors would have done a Russian accent even if it was an all British cast. They are actors after all. It would have made it feel more like a Russian story. Only worth seeing this movie because it looked beautiful. By the way the story was presented in the movie, I didn't really get the feel for anything for that time in Russia that inspried the book.
| 5/10 | spacecharm@ - 70 reviews 7.2.2013 - age: 36-49 |
I loved this movie - because of the staging. It was so uniquely done and there was so much symbolism built into this movie. It felt that we were in a live theatre on some levels - other times in a 50's movie. I loved the scenes with the dancing and with the factory scenes. If any disappointment - I don't particularly enjoy Keira Knightley - she's pretty and wears costumes really nicely, but I think she plays the same character in all her movies the same way. Loved how the actor portrayed her brother, also her husband. Jude Law - I don't think he was fabulous. Again, he was ok. But this was a beautiful film, very uniquely portrayed, very light. Very serious topic. But enjoyable.

One of the so few times that the movie is as good as the book. A bit too much of caricature of the Russian society but this allows even better to appreciate what is happening to Anna and how tragic is her life and especially her end.
| 9/10 | tfeliks@ - first review 30.1.2013 - age: 50+ |
Very good movie, actors, production, everything. I was a bit puzzled at first with the way the story was shown with theater mixed with 'real' scenery but it was very good. It is good that the melodrama of the story was not avoided and that the tragic of Anna's life dominated.

This is an intelligent, original rendering of a well-known Tolstoy story and it is far-removed from the Greta Garbo straight forward version of the 30s. And that's a good thing. It reminds one of the expression," all the world's a stage."; the viewer is given that impression, that he is looking at scenes presented on a stage or above the stage. There is too much detail to recount here, but it must be said that Ms. Knightly is a luminous Anna. The movie is a visual feast with incomparable photography, costumes and production design. Scene transitions are ingenious. Yes, the film is very arty but in a unique and operatic fashion.

Great artistic direction. I loved the symbolism, the costumes and the set. The emotion in the acting was superb! Overall, it was not what I expected and much more. I need to read the book!

Exquisite artifice. Captures the period. Foreshadows the Russian Revolution.

Leo Tolstoy is one of the best writer of all time. He saw that emotions rule, not intelligence. Movies are always an insight into the frailties of humanity.

A poor rendition of the classic novel. Read the book instead.
| 2/10 | sheila.oxford@ - 2 reviews 15.1.2013 - age: 13-17 |
I kept waiting for everyone to get "off the stage" and more into movie style because that's what it is, a movie, if I wanted to see a play, I would have gone to see a play! They keep trying to do something different and artistic but with a classic like this one that most people know, it just doesn't work. The only thing I liked was the costumes. The love scenes were close to vulgar and not tender and romantic at all, no feeling and you don't really feel for Anna (I actually started to dislike her) Earlier adaptations of this great classic are way superior!!

Very poorly put together. I wouldn't see it if it was free. I tried sleeping throughout it, but too noisy. More fun watching paint dry.

An ambitious attempt. Beautiful lighting, interesting concept with sets, and a few great performances from Jude Law and company. Unfortunately none of it could mask the painful lack of passion and chemistry between the two main leads.
| 5/10 | kelseisle@ - 98 reviews 15.1.2013 - age: 26-35 |
Anyone who would call this film distracting or self indulgent is clearly inexperienced in both Russian grandiose and the point of theatre itself. I read the book so found this a great rendition of the characters. I think they were played brilliantly. Here is a novel that has been done millions of times over and I think this take was fresh, beautiful, scenic, melancholy and rich. I cannot commend enough the stage sets, the direction, the costume, the dance. Yes some shots were too prolonged and too stoic but was this a retreat from reality and a vicarious glimpse of Russian aristocracy and a lesson to foolish women who dare to love the wrong man? YES! Tolstoy himself was self indulgent and used this book as a lesson against anyone who lived outside of the moral of "honour". So I feel this was the perfect cinematic depiction of the novel. If you liked Black Swan and Dogville I feel you will love this as well. If you're idea of a great book to movie was Eat Pray Love stay at home. You are much too blaise for these prose.

It seems that the new movies with old themes miss the whole point of the century they describe. After the nauseating cinematography of Le Miz I had to go again through the same pain watching Anna Karenina. I doubt that those who did not read the book or at least watched the previous good versions of the movie, will understand the subject and why the characters behave the way they do. This movie is a super realistic parody of Russian society without any understanding of the real tragedy that inspired Tolstoy's novel. It seems like low budget movie disguised in an modern vision production. The music is nice (just nice) but has nothing to do with Russian soul. I strongly advise those who hear about Anna Karenina for the first time to read the book and watch Anna Karenina 1997 film directed by Bernard Rose and starring Sophie Marceau, or 2000 the British television adaptation of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina.

Although the acting, the music, the scenery and photography were excellent, I did not particularly like the "stage-like" presentation of this story. I would have much preferred a more realistic approach in which one can feel the drama and the realism of the story as opposed to this more fantastic presentation. Nonetheless, I recognize the high quality of this production.

Attempt from the director to keep the theatrical aspect of Tolstoy's play. It must have been a real challenge for set design. Inventive on that aspect. Costumes are magnificent.

Having read the book and seen the original version it was definitely more technically superior. I still prefer the older version.

We didn't like the artistic, theatrical style, not even with the beautiful costumes. We stopped watching it after 20 minutes. The previous one with Sophie Marceau is our favourite version for sure.

I really enjoyed the "mise en scène", I thought it was original and really pretty; but I would have taken more of it. I never read the book so I didn't know the story at all and I'm pretty sure some parts of the book are not in the movie and it makes a couple of things a bit hard to understand, like the motivations of the characters. Having said all this, I still enjoyed myself a lot, worth seeing in theater, great costumes and jewels and Keira Knightley is made for that kind of parts.

This was a total race through Anna Karenina with a lot of the story left out! It was filmed in a rather strange style reminiscent of Nicole Kidman's Moulin Rouge. I thought the costumes and jewellery were beautiful but this movie is not memorable and I don't think it will win any awards.

Although the acting was good and the sets and costumes were well done, I couldn't help but hope the movie would end sooner rather than later. Had I been on my own, I probably would have left halfway through.

I didn't find very much about this movie to like at all. The decision to shoot the movie interspaced with a theatrical setting was an annoying distraction that made a difficult plot even more difficult to follow. The whole movie was rather flat and lifeless. On the whole, I found the whole thing rather self-indulgent and consider this at one of the worst of the many movie I have seen this year.

This movie is for the opened minded person. The ending is sad yet realistic for that century. You can see women have come along way since that century, and yet we experience still the same problems today. How do we handle such heartache so it ends well? This is a common trap women get into all the time.
| 10/10 | corobie@ - 6 reviews 29.12.2012 - age: 36-49 |
Vronsky very badly cast, he wore more make up than Anna, not a hero, definitely read the book, beautiful costumes and cinematography, beautiful backdrops, beautiful jewelry and furs, I'm sure they did not dance like they did in the movie in Imperial Russia, could have watched it on mute.
| 3/10 | pfhoward@ - first review 28.12.2012 - age: 50+ |
This movie is an 8/10 overall. The cinematography, scenes/sets, costumes, and music are excellent. These probably deserve a 9 or 10. Very imaginative, whimsical, and beautiful - especially on the big screen. Characters appear to be on stage, but then the stage recedes into real life scenes. Quite good. WHY SOME GAVE IT LESS: It is not a "straight" Drama, but a mix of musical/stage play etc. If you weren't ready for this, you might find it bothersome. Also, the first part of the movie - is a bit disjointed - and the intensity of the characters emotions - doesn't quite build properly. Passion seems to arise out of nowhere, and belongs mostly to Anna. (The second half is better.) The camera moves a bit too quickly (at times), and I think several slower scenes - in the first 45 min. Would have improved the storytelling. (Leading man OK., not quite handsome enough.) Still, this is a really good movie - full of beauty, and imagination. Notice the details on the sets, clothes, etc. What the directors have tried to do, is quite spectacular and different. If you like the story, go and see it with an open mind and you will enjoy it.

Beautiful sets and costumes. Too much moving camera work, circling the actors and nauseam and jumping around. Too artsy for a classic period piece. And no 'eye candy' for the ladies. The leading man was insipid looking.
| 6/10 | painterpat@ - 6 reviews 20.12.2012 - age: 50+ |
It's not quite a movie and not quite a play so it comes out as very distracting. The story line follows the book but there is so much missing that those who have not read the book might have a hard time understanding what is really going on. The acting was ok, the music was good and some of the photography was excellent. Not a very enjoyable experience.

Tolstoi's masterpiece revisited in a modern vision: theater in theater, nice winks to ballet and musical comedy. Magnificent costumes, mesmerising Keira Knightly. I was cautious before seeing it since I knew very well the story and had seen previous versions but Stoppard & Wright managed to offer a different vision.
